Metal Archives [95%]:
7 years. 7 long motherfucking years, but Pyorrhoea are finally back with the follow-up to the spectacular 2006 album; The Eleventh: Thou Shalt Be My Slave, which completely destroyed the opposition on my album of the year list. Their incredibly fun and potent mixture of death metal, grindcore and even punk blasted the album to the top in probably the shortest time it has taken any album I’ve ever considered for my yearly list, and it never gets old.
The band was formed in mid-2001 by Cyprian, (ex-Hate), Andy Blakk and Daray (ex-Vader, Vesania, Dimmu Borgir), and after a demo in 2002, the band released its first album, Desire for Torment in 2004. As stated, the band’s special blend of metal is so incredibly energetic and entertaining to listen to, but still retains a good amount of the world renowned Polish death metal wizardry. The debut album is very good, but it wasn’t until two years later that they really made an impact on me.
The Eleventh: Thou Shalt Be My Slave was a whole new beast compared to the debut album. Gone were the pig squeal vocals, the death metal element was turned down a notch but the grindcore and punk elements were maxed out, in a similar vein as modern grindcore bands, yet they amazingly managed to retain the unmistakable Polish death metal sound, which is pretty much the pinnacle in the world of modern death metal today. The album simply rips from start to finish and is so unrelenting and viciously driven that the listener is never given even the smallest chance to come up for air. Absolutely amazing stuff, and as I said, the album just planted itself in my player and refused to come out, earning it my album of the year 2006, and by quite a margin I might add.
Now, 7 years later, there have been a couple of line-up changes in the band, they have left Empire Records and it’s finally time for the long awaited, self-released third album, titled I Am The War. Given the time it took for it to emerge and the low visibility of the band, I was a little apprehensive regarding which musical direction they’d take, but only a couple of tracks in, I was able to release a healthy sigh of relief because it’s pretty much in the same vein and every bit as good as its predecessor. It’s a little grittier, a little heavier, a little more varied in the velocity department, even though they still don’t allow you much time to catch a breath between songs, and they even tossed in a tremendously entertaining punk-oriented ditty too.
Musically, it’s on par with Eleventh, the songwriting and musicianship is brilliant, and first time listen leaves plenty of memorable riffs and passages, thanks to the aforementioned traits and a superb production as well. Somehow, in midst of this deliciously cacophonous wall of music, they still manage to keep it fluid, so much so that it sometimes manages to go a couple of spins on repeat without me noticing. One thing that really stands out on this album compared to their earlier works is the rhythm section, but new-guy Amon, on drums, and original founder, Cyprian on bass really manage to elevate the quality of the music by focusing on the drive instead of technical wankery. It’s the basis for the whole album, and backed by that wall of rhythm, guitarists Lukas and A.D Gore, who has also assumed vocal responsibilities, apply layers upon layers of thick, chunky and gritty riffs and rhythms, perfectly harmonious to the guttural and powerful vocal patterns. Stand-out tracks on this album are too many to mention and you won’t find a single drop in ferocity throughout its 30 minute playing time. This is furniture wrecking stuff and definitely one of the best and most entertaining metal albums of 2013.
